Between Worlds: A Photo Journey
Exploring the beauty of travel’s transitional spaces… and our relationship to them
“Airports, train stations, and road trips often have a certain magic to them—almost like stepping outside of time.
These are liminal spaces, the “in-between” places where we’re no longer where we were but not yet where we’re going. The usual rules of daily life seem to pause, creating a sense of disorientation or freedom. Research suggests that liminal spaces can enhance self-reflection and creativity because they remove us from routine and place us in a transitional state of mind. Whether unsettling or liberating, these moments offer a rare pause to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed.” 1

Hi all,
As a big fan of planes (…and trains, and ships…) which have blessedly and safely carried me to every corner of this beautiful planet, it was the quote above by Katie Blake that got my juices going.
It’s not just my love of travel and photographing anything related to travel that is prompting today’s post. It’s the concept of in-betweenness that feels so alive and potent.
…
It is in those transitional moments — between where we’ve been and where we’re going — when it feels like anything is possible.
…
And what better way to connect in for real than through an airport, or a train station, or road trip. As Blake suggests, these liminal spaces do have a certain magic to them.
So today I thought I would take you on a little photo journey with a wonder question to ponder as you scroll through.
Can you picture yourself in any these situations below without wishing you were somewhere else?
Ahhh ✈️

Pulling their weight
I marveled at how this mom uses these ingenious roller bags to travel with her kids. The white one is super well stocked too with toys and snacks, I was told. In her words: “And I don’t have to carry them.”
Could she mean the kids? 😉
Speaking of waiting

The Art of Waiting
Imagine how many hours we’ve spent in our lifetime… just waiting. What would happen if we stopped to pause on purpose? 🤔 Let’s explore what that might look like in this photo series...
The best part of travel for me is watching people like this ingenious mom. That makes me smile and think that I could stay in airports happy since I get to connect with humanity.
I love airports. I love that I can just sit there and disappear. Ironically, I sometimes do my best writing or accomplish the most on an airplane ride....no distractions and the encouragement to just focus...or space out. Whichever.
