Ahh-Wear-Ness
What does your dressing style say about you? Exploring our choices in clothing and why we wear what we do.
I was reading about the late Iris Apfel, the New York fashion sensation who passed away recently at the age 102.
Apel believed “in the virtues of muchness, of giving free rein to your inner extremism and letting your fashion freak flag fly.” 1
Seeing how she made art out of what she wore inspired me to make art about what I wear…
As it were. 😉
Seriously though, Apfel’s dress style and attention to detail got me thinking about why I wear what I wear and what it might say about me.
There’s no secret what my style telegraphs about me: simple cozy-comfort pretty much rules my day (and closet). While I love layering with colorful and flowy garments and scarves on special occasions, I always end up wearing the same thing:
anything that feels like PJs.
Traveling as much as I have, and do, dictates my style too. Hands-free minimalism and practicality makes a huge difference when I’m thinking of suitcase size, laundry access, and extreme heat and humidity.
This Instagram photo I posted from our last trip around the world pretty much tells the story:
How about you? What animates your dress style and wardrobe choices?
And more to the point — like those Hollywood red carpet celebrity interviews — perhaps I should also ask:
Who are you wearing?
Would it be more of a ‘true you’? Or a ‘dress-to-impress’ you?
No judgment either way.
It is about awareness after all.
Ahhh 👗👔👘
Im coming to the end of my Camino de Santiago and am down to 1 set of clothes to wear and one to change in to. Donated clothes and items i don’t use on my journey. Realise how little I need but plan to buy a few new colourful clothes in Santiago to party in. Loud and proud 70 year old!
I am a little like Stephanie. I dress for comfort, convenience and efficiency. I always have a sun visor, sunglasses that will fit over my eyeglasses and use a multi compartment small purse. I also carry a fold up bag inside of the multi compartment purse for unexpected extras. I am not about displaying name brand labels but I do love to wear natural fiber clothes like cotton and linen for their comfort and environmental benefits. I am not into fashion but like classics. I avoid fast fashion. I'm 65 and feel the only person I need to impress is myself. LOL
