In Praise of Cards and Those Who Send Them
When a simple act of love goes a long way
Last week I shared a bit of my (ongoing) journey with clearing out old letters. You can find the link to it below.
One of you posted this beautiful comment that really moved me:
“I send cards. A lot. I know it is old school. But I also know that friends and family appreciate them. My husband says "I give good card". Expensive sometimes but so worth it. And I pick stamps to match the folks or my mood. It is just my way of saying to someone. "I see you". So even though it is old school and not as ecological, I plan on keeping doing it as it brings folks a lot of joy.” —Melissa M
As the recipient (and saver) of so many beautiful cards, I must confess that I’m not great at sending them.
While card-giving has never been my preferred method of expressing love, Melissa’s line “I see you” touches me. It makes me appreciate the effort all the more — the choosing, the buying, the composing, the stamping, the mailing — that goes on behind this simple act of acknowledgment.
So to all of you card-givers out there, we see you!
Today’s newsletter — and the photo series that follows below — is my small way of honoring all of you who go the extra mile to make our day a little better.
Thank you!
Ahhh 🙏🏼❤️
Your turn…
Are you a card giver? What moves you to send one?
What do you do with a card after you’ve received one? (e.g. Do you display it? Do you save it? Do you toss it?)
What’s your favorite way of showing and sharing your love?

The Art of Cards
Here’s a small sample of cards that I had found when I went through my boxes of old letters. I did eventually let many of them go (after making these digital versions with my iPhone)…
I LOVE making and sending cards to my friends. My Mom was always writing letters, and sending cards. I also started collecting quotes as a teenager, which grew into using those quotes on my cards. It’s a wonderful to make someones day.
I have saved cards from my Mum(now passed) and my friend kids when they made them as littles, I put in cookbooks to mark fav recipes. When I go to hook to make for an event, I'm delighted to see them again, feels like a visit of times past. 💕
