Moving Pictures: Women Being Seen and Heard
Spacious reveals (and favorite TV shows) from life in the slow lane
Welcome to my latest monthly video recap* of life in the slow lane (attached below).
What strikes me when I view my daily image log is how much armchair time-traveling I did…
via our humble TV.
Even more striking to me is how many strong, powerful women appear in the images I chose to showcase each day.
From 17th century Japan with Shogun…
to 1776 in Paris with [Benjamin] Franklin…
to modern day Las Vegas with Hacks…
and back to Paris again with the Olympics.
(In case you missed it, you can see more images from my Olympics photo love fest in last week’s post: “What Olympians Can Teach Us Mere Mortals.”)
Without question, July’s TV viewing was off the charts. Hacks in its third season, in particular, was a total standout with the exceptional talents of Jean Smart playing Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder playing her millennial sidekick and foil, Eva Daniels.
What made this season of Hacks so good, besides the brilliant ensemble cast, was its writing. The creators made us believe in and love the characters so much; made us feel their pain, shame, and burning desire to remain relevant in the face of a fast-changing culture.
There is nothing more beautiful to me than watching women being seen, heard, and celebrated — not just on TV, but in life.
Lest we forget that July also ushered in an unprecedented opportunity for a woman to become President of the United States. Regardless of your political affiliation, you’ve got to love the fact that in just one week, a woman of color has roared into the spotlight and created a movement — widening the space even more for women’s voices to be heeded and heard.
And all I can say is…
Ahhh 📣

* New to my monthly recaps of life in the slow lane?
I make these short one-second slices-of-life videos at the end of each month, not just to mark and remember the precious fleeting moments of my life, but as a way to wake up. It helps me connect with the beauty that surrounds us, the goodness in people, and the magic that happens when we let go of attachment to outcome and embrace what shows up.
Yes!! What fabulous women we have to watch! I’m loving the joy on Kamala’s face! What positivity for all our girls to see a leader shine.
Thanks for the suggestions of shows. I am currently watching the "Marvelous Mrs Maisel". She is outspoken, funny, marvelous, but has her weaknesses, too. I like it because nobody is perfect in this world anyway, and a career often comes with a price to pay.
