“We are sweeping—a kind of delicate dance which results in this dirt being outside now with the other dirt—moved on. I want to be here with this moving on, moment to moment, sweeping.”—Gunilla Norris

If you’ve followed my teachings, you probably know that I’m a big fan of sweeping. And if you’re rolling your eyes, going, Here she goes again with the lesson on sweeping, let me ask you: When was the last time you picked up a broom? Or swept a floor with your whole heart and awareness?

Exactly. We forget.

If not the sweeping part, we forget the awareness part.

When it comes to experiencing quick relief fast, there is nothing better than your old trusty friend, that thing on a stick squirreled away in your kitchen closet: your broom.

Add one minute of awareness to this task—or any housekeeping task, for that matter—and you’ve raised your game to a quantum level.

The simple act of sweeping with awareness isn’t just great for moving cobwebs out of your house; it has a magic way of releasing the cobwebs between your ears as well.

It’s an excellent tool to use when you’re noodling on something, can’t see your way to a solution, or feel just plain stuck. As a daily practice, it works equally well to invoke a fresh start, anchor an intention, cultivate mindfulness, and calm the noisy mind and nervous system.

While the task itself has you thinking you’re working on something “productive,” the truth is that it has a wonderful way of working on you—charming you—into a deep place of contentment, while it quiets the part of the mind that feels it needs to be in control.

Reach for a broom today, and let it all go.

Who knows, you might even experience a moment of quiet spaciousness that was not there before.1

What are you ready to free up (ease out, lift up, jiggle loose) this week?
