We can’t think our way out of emotional clutter. But we can sense our way through it. This post is an invitation to engage all six senses to soften, release, and transform what is holding you back.

As you may already know or have guessed, my work largely focuses on a system of clearing homes and hearts that has very little to do with the intellect. While my resources offer plenty of practical tips, tools, and how-tos to charm the rational part of our brain (that is so eager to “fix” and “do something”), the process of clearing itself is more sensory and intuitive by nature.

To the degree that you are not attached to a particular outcome, clearing the Spacious Way can deliver results at lightning speeds. And it is thanks to your six senses that all of this is possible.

The sensory muscles we’ve been developing over the past weeks—of seeing, smelling, tasting, touching, listening, and intuiting—are not only terrific pathways for experiencing more of that yummy light and beauty that abounds “out there.” They are also an exceptional resource for processing and releasing more of the darkness and discord we all carry within.

And why might you want to rely more on your heart rather than your head when the results are so much harder to measure and quantify when you do?

One of the biggest reasons comes down to that coiled-up mess we all know so well: our emotions. The Spacious Way goes in deep to soften resisting patterns and dissolve the energetic charge they hold. Plus, it’s more sustainable.

As yoga teacher Julie Peters illuminates so succintly in Spirituality & Health:

As much as we might try, our emotions are not controllable. They are not clean, separable entities we can put in boxes, label, and shelve. They are a tangled mess in our brains, bodies, and nervous systems. They can be triggered by an immediate event, or arise as an echo of some experience we had years ago. We even have mirror neurons in our brains that help us pick up on the emotions of others—seeing someone cry makes us sad even if we have absolutely no idea why the person is crying. We can feel things that have nothing to do with us! There’s nothing rational about emotions. They just are.

How do we untangle the mess? How do we know whose emotional “clutter” is whose? How do we identify and heal what is ours?

In a sense, none of that matters. Questions like these don’t help us heal, because it’s the mind trying to sort out what cannot be sorted out by way of the mind.

Emotions can only be observed and felt; witnessed and embraced.

At the same time.

In present time.

Without attachment.

In the end, the only way through to clearing whatever holds us back is to tune in to it with all of our senses.

Or, to put it more plainly: to come to our senses.1
