Magic moments rarely arrive in the ways we expect it. Sometimes, they blow by in full color—reminding us to lighten up and keep laughing.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a simple encounter with beauty that I nearly missed — the kind that whispers rather than announces itself.

But what about the magic that refuses to whisper? The kind that bursts into your day uninvited — absurd, out of nowhere, defying logic, making no sense at all, yet somehow lifting your mood before you even realize what’s happening?

All of that found me one random afternoon.

I was out for my usual walk when I heard a fast-tempo trumpet sound getting closer and closer. With no idea what it might be, I pulled out my phone and hit record — just in case it turned out to be something wonderful. And it was.

What literally breezed by was a shirtless bike rider wearing a wild hat, flying a kite, and playing a trumpet — all at the same time.

Wait, what?!

I know. And as if that weren’t enough, he took a bow when he saw me. (I hadn’t noticed that part until I watched the video later that day.) For a split second, it felt like he was my court jester, reminding me not to take anything too seriously.

And that’s the thing about these moments. They sneak in through the side door — playful, unplanned, impossible to explain — yet somehow they land exactly where they’re needed.

Strange occurrences that make no sense (and perfect sense at the same time) are some of the ways light reveals itself. In my experience, this is the kind of thing that starts to happen a lot more when you adopt a daily diet of the Five S’s.

What is one thing about yourself that you take way too seriously that could be lightened up?

What’s something serious you’ve been holding on to — a thought, a worry, a fear — that could be swapped out for its opposite?

What’s one thing you can do today to invite some unmitigated JOY into your day?1

Let’s play!

Ahhh 🤩

PS: You can watch my shirtless court jester in the video clip below — along with two other unexpected delights — real-life reminders that Joy (and a little absurdity) are always nearby.
