Spending Time Alone
Tell us about your perfect day — real or desired — where nothing gets in the way of doing what you love
Let us count the ways we love our solitude.
Me? I like an evening with a sketch pad, about fifteen bowls of popcorn drenched in maple syrup, the dogs a-snooze—each in their own mud-clotted club chair, the cat keeping watch on the mantle, and the dark navy sky about to let loose with a fat load of snow.
And you? Tell us the best things about being alone with your own delectable self…
—E. Jean Carroll, “Alone…at last!”
Me? As an introvert, an unrushed day free of shoulds and obligations is pure heaven.
It’s not fancy, but I love it. From slow rise in the morning to feet up in the evening, I revel in quiet, revel in cozy, revel in routine. Sipping coffee in bed, opening the shades in the morning, closing them at night, puttering around the house, putting a thing or two away (I love putting things away)… never gets old.
Finding beauty in ordinary things, taking pictures, getting lost in a writing or photo project, being read to while I walk, listening to jazz over wine and cheese, watching the sun set if possible, catching another episode of a favorite TV series, sipping peppermint tea before turning in for the night…
How about you? What would make your time alone downright heavenly?
Ahhh 🏡
We live in a 4-generation household, and I am my 89-year-old mother‘s full-time caregiver in addition to helping with the grandkids as needed. An ideal day for me would be to have the day completely alone, no responsibilities or obligations for anyone else for a day. 😁 A few cups of delicious dark roast coffee in the morning while I read, followed by day of uninterrupted reading with maybe a movie or two thrown in there. Delicious snacks and food through the day, Including wine and pastries, and things that I normally wouldn’t have. No lists to complete, no need to get out of my pajamas!
