Hidden eyes observe.

It seems that no one’s watching

When they’re watching you.

—Haiku

It was this mural — her eye peeking out from under the artist’s brushstrokes — that caught my attention. As a photographer and inveterate people watcher, I knew I had more photos like this one in my archives; pictures of unsuspecting people captured under the watchful eye of others.

I chose the three below. I’d be curious to know what effect they have on you.

The last two images in particular (plus the mural above) are having an interesting effect on me as I study them more closely. Humorous as they may seem on the surface, I notice myself feeling a rising discomfort. Is it unwanted intrusion? Creepiness? I can’t tell what it is.

Perhaps the larger question to be asking is more along the lines of this:

How comfortable are we to be seen, truly seen, in the best ways (not the creepy ways).
